Define the full store interaction first
Start with registration, identification at checkout and the process for a lost card. If a POS application reads an identifier through a reader, record the device model, supported card type and identifier format. If customers tap with a phone to reach a benefits page, define the web destination and sign-in experience separately. These interactions can coexist, but one card should not be assumed to work with every device. Test a finished sample with the actual checkout reader and the representative phones used by customers.
- Checkout identification, phone access or both
- Identifier fields, display format and mapping to the membership system
- Loss reporting, unlinking, replacement and multi-store use
Separate the card identifier from the member account
Specify the card identifier and let the membership platform map it to an account. Names, contact details, points and purchase history should not become publicly readable NFC content. For gift redemption or balances, have the server check account state and permissions and let the business system record the transaction. A premium-looking card does not establish a secure account design. Projects involving stored value or access rights need a chip and authentication scheme agreed with the system provider before the production specification is approved.
Choose a finish that supports daily use
Foil, brushed, embossed and matte options can communicate a membership tier, while the serial, QR code or barcode still needs to remain legible. Reserve the identifier area before approving artwork and check whether reflective finishes make scanning or manual checking difficult. Have store staff rehearse the interaction, including where to present the card and what to do when a reading fails. Compare appearance, reading consistency and everyday handling on physical samples. A digital mockup alone cannot establish how a card works at a busy checkout.
Plan activation and replenishment in the brief
Include the expected quantity, reader details, intended use, finish, serial-number requirements and the party responsible for writing and binding cards. If the factory handles serial data, agree the columns, sample rows, duplicate checks and transfer method without sending customer lists through a public inquiry form. Request a sample plan and define the numbered batch list, inspection record and artwork version that accompany production. This gives new-store openings and replacement batches a clear reference instead of restarting the specification with each order.
